🎧 LISTEN TO: The Abortion Debate Has Come to Southern California City Councils: First San Clemente, Then Temecula
TGIF, Privates!
Hallelujah, we made it. The weekend is upon us.
Personal update: I did get that Ephemeral Tattoo for my birthday. I got the words “Luck is an Art” inspired by the HBO documentary The Last Movie Stars about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward (directed by Ethan Hawke!). I fell in love with them and their incredibly flawed yet somehow functional, enduring relationship. They had a bedroom dubbed the “fuck hut” where they would get away from the kids and do grownup stuff.
Anyway, I highly recommend you watch the docuseries for yourself, but Paul Newman’s motto was “luck is an art.” I love that phrase — to me, it means luck is something you prepare for, keep your eye out for, and cherish when you’re in its presence.
This was my first tattoo, and I very much liked how it felt. It was a good hurt, like a high-speed vibrator with a needle on the tip. I totally understand how some people get addicted. Next time you see me, I might have a face tat.
Now for something less amusing. The latest episode perfectly encapsulates how the abortion debate has become a truly national issue: it has begun popping up at Southern California City Council meetings! This first happened over the summer in San Clemente and, more recently, in Temecula. So I’m taking you inside a recent Temecula City Council to show you how it all went down.
Even though these local governments have no jurisdiction and the state attorney general made it clear he would defend reproductive freedom through lawsuits if necessary, it’s terrifying that abortion rights are being threatened at any level of government in California. If you discover this happening in your community, it’s important to show up and make your voice heard.
REMINDER: I’m fundraising for a reproductive rights reporting trip, and you can help!
