🎧 LISTEN TO: A Brief History of Sex Toys with Hallie Lieberman, Author of “Buzz: The Stimulating History of the Sex Toy”
Hello Privates!
Y’all are my favorite sex nerds, and we are officially back to school with our latest guest, Hallie Lieberman, the author of Buzz: The Stimulating History of the Sex Toy. Hallie literally has a Ph.D. in sex toys, so she’s the perfect guide to talk us through the highlight reel of sex toy history.
We discuss how sex toys were illegal in Texas until 2008 (and the frightening fact that sex-related laws are regressing again), what it’s like to explore the Kinsey Institute archives, the playfulness of Japanese shunga, Anthony Comstock and his terrible legacy of sexual suppression, Betty Dodson and how she linked masturbation to women’s liberation, and the incredible story of how an unexpected disability turned Gosnell Duncan into a pioneering dildo maker.
Hallie also shares what she learned from writing “Women Explain Why They Buy Male Sex Dolls” for Buzzfeed’s Sneaky Links series, her predictions for the intersection of sex toys and politics in the future, and more. Plus, we swap gigolo stories.
P.S. If that wasn’t enough sex toy history for you, here’s some extra credit: Check out the Joy Boy podcast about Gosnell Duncan and the silicone dildo. Hallie reported the story, and it’s narrated by Steve Buscemi!
